A Letter from Dr. Schiavone

March 2017

Dear Parents and Friends of Quarry Hill,

For the last three years, steps have been taken to transition the school’s inner courtyard into an Audubon- certified interactive learning environment with an emphasis on birds, their habitats and patterns. Thanks to the efforts of many, sources of food and water have been installed, shelter has been created and small seating areas for students have been arranged. Hopefully, you have visited the QH bird blog (quarryhillbirds.com) to view pictures of related activities and read what our bloggers are writing!

Our next phase of the “Learning N.E.S.T.” is about to begin and includes raising funds to support the creation of an area that supports STEM activities with the creation of a student patio with pergola (adjacent to the library) and vegetable garden. Subsequent phases will include a terraced water area, installation of pavers, ground cover and installation of a bird camera. The goal is to create a 21st century space for all students to interact with nature while learning content-specific material.

Parents have volunteered to assist with design and installation, write grants to procure funding, provide financial and marketing advice, facilitate the many meetings, and manage the project.

I am asking each family to support the fundraising goals and to involve neighbors, relatives, friends and colleagues.  All of our students, present and those to come in the future, will benefit from the creation of this state of the art outdoor learning space. Our students and families deserve this and we need your support!

Quarry Hill Elementary and Quarry Hill PTO are not-for-profit organizations. All or part of your gift may be tax deductible as a charitable contribution.  Information will be forthcoming to describe fundraising goals and events. Our first fundraising effort will begin this week with our Steps to the NEST NESTfest kick-off event on Thursday. Students will have an opportunity during this event to learn more about the Learning NEST.

Thank you for your continuing support and engagement!

Very truly yours,

Peggy A. Schiavone, Ed.D.
