Most birds have an oil gland at the base of their tail. They use their beak to spread this oil over their feathers to make them waterproof. This allows them to keep flying, even when it rains! But this doesn’t mean the birds like the rain. Rain can make birds, especially small ones, cold easily. During downpours, you won’t see many of them getting snacks from our feeders. Instead they will be seeking shelter in bushes, trees, and in their nesting cavities. If the rain goes on too long though, they eventually have to come out and forage again. So rain rain go away, our feathered friends want you to come back another day.
